February 2009 — D5 Surveyors receive training on 3D Laser Scanner

D5 Surveyors receive week-long training from Caltrans HQ Office of Land Survey and AHMCT, and start surveying using terrestrial 3D laser scanner. Caltrans District 5 is now ready to deploy a Leica ScanStation 2 in survey projects.

On Jan 30, 2009, Caltrans District 5 surveyors— Neal Dickey, Robert MacKenzie, Richard Majernik, Brian Meeks, and Jonathan Walsh— received training in operating a Leica Geosystems ScanStation 2 laser scanner and using Leica Cyclone point cloud post-processing software from AHMCT Research Center and Caltrans Headquarters personnel.

Deployment of terrestrial 3D laser scanning systems for surveys hit a major deployment milestone in January, when District 5 become the fifth Caltrans District trained on using this new survey tool. The photos show the survey area and Caltrans and AHMCT personnel in action.

Caltrans surveyors and management have evaluated terrestrial 3D laser scanning with support from the AHMCT Research Center. To date, District 1, 4, 5, 6, and 11 have been trained on using the Leica ScanStation 2 and Cyclone post-processing software. District 4 surveyors successfully procured and deployed a ScanStation 2, and have performed numerous scans on new and old Bay Bridge structures and other project sites. District 7 plans to use laser scanning in a rock fall study. District 1 received training from Caltrans HQ, and is applying laser scanning at a landslide site.

June 2008 — D11 deploys a 3D Laser Scanner

Caltrans District 11 deploys a Leica ScanStation 2 in new survey projects. The new terrestrial laser scanning system was also featured in the D11 Survey Open House. It was well-received by survey customers, resulting in new requests for survey work using terrestrial 3D laser scanning.

On June 23, 2008: Caltrans District 11 surveyors— Chelsie Hopkins, Jason Webb, and Dave Olander— received training in operating a Leica Geosystems ScanStation 2 laser scanner and using Leica Cyclone point cloud post-processing software from AHMCT Research Center and Caltrans Headquarters personnel. Deployment of terrestrial 3D laser scanning systems for surveys hit a major deployment milestone in June, when District 11 San Diego surveyors used a Leica ScanStation 2 to survey the California Highway 805 and 95 interchange. The photos show the survey area and Caltrans and AHMCT personnel in action.

June 2008 — D10 Posts First Message using IRIS

On June 6, 2008, a D10 TMC operator posts the first real message to a Changeable Message Sign using IRIS (Intelligent Roadway Information System).

IRIS underlies the new Caltrans District 10 Open Source Advanced Traffic Management System.

On June 6, 2008, at 12:48 pm, the Caltrans District 10 IRIS Demonstration project hit a major deployment milestone when District 10 Stockton TMC operator Tammy Shivers posted the first real CMS message using the Intelligent Roadway Information System (IRIS) prototype. The two-page message that was posted was:

District 10 TMC operators and management have been evaluating IRIS since AHMCT installed the test prototype (Release 1) in D10 on May 20, 2008. The short period between D10 beginning internal testing and their posting a real-world message is a testament to the quality of the IRIS open-source ATMS developed by Minnesota DOT, and the Caltrans-specific developments and enhancements by AHMCT.
